The Benefits of Meditation


Let’s face it, life can be hectic and very challenging most of the time. We juggle work responsibilities, our ever growing to do list, take care of our families and still have to figure out a way to show up for ourselves. It can be overwhelming. But the practice of meditation can be beneficial in helping us manage our day to day lives.


Meditation is a set of techniques that are used to heighten awareness and focus your attention. It has been practiced in cultures around the world for thousands of years. While mediation is often used for religious purposes, many people practice it independently of any religious or spiritual beliefs or practices.


There are many benefits to curating a mediation practice. Meditation can reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality, assist with pain management, increase self awareness and improve your ability to be patient. Many people also report better stress management, increased mindfulness and emotional well-being, better management of mood disorders ( i.e. depression, anxiety) and decreased blood pressure.


Here are a few tips for starting a meditation practice.

  • Start slow by doing a short session lasting 5-10 minutes per day.You can always work your way up.

  • Set a schedule that works for you. By meditating at the same time each day such as in the morning before starting your day, you create a healthy habit that prepares your mind and body for the day ahead.

  • Get in the position that is most comfortable for you. Some people sit in a chair, others sit cross-legged on the floor, while some people prefer to lie down. The choice is yours to make each and every day.

  • Use an app on your phone or tablet to help you get started. There are a host of apps that make it easy to begin a meditation practice.


Creating a meditation practice can be challenging at first, but starting something new is typically challenging. Don’t get discouraged if this is the case for you. Try different methods until you settle on the one that works the best for you. Personalize it specifically for you so you can enjoy the many wonderful benefits of meditation.
